Chief Duane Everhart

In accordance with Article 4, Section D, Paragraph 1 of the Constitution and Bylaws – The Tribal
Council shall elect from the Clan Chiefs and Mothers a Principal Chief. The Principal Chief shall
act as chairman of the Council, be the administrator of the Counsel’s determinations, and carry
out other duties as assigned by the Council. At the May 2024 Spring Council Meeting, Duane
Everhart was voted in as Principal Chief. Mr. Everhart has served as the Second Chief since
2012 and on Tribal Council since 2003. Mr. Everhart earned a Bachelor of Science degree from
Defiance College, with a major in Criminal Justice and a Master of Criminal Justice and ABD
degrees in Sociology from the University of South Carolina. He has been a professor for over 30
years at various colleges and universities throughout North and South Carolina. He also served
as a Deputy Sheriff and is currently retired from the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve as a Chief
Warrant Officer 3.
